To the Mayor and Councillors of Nillumbik Shire Council

We, the undersigned residents of Victoria, request that Nillumbik Shire Council:

allocate the land at 895 Main Road, Eltham for the Nillumbik Art Museum; and

research the various funding options available from State and Federal governments and philanthropic institutions to support the construction of the museum.

This petition will be lodged with Nillumbik Shire Council under its Governance Rules. Any resident of Victoria may sign. Signatures from outside Victoria are warmly welcomed as support, but Council counts only Victorian residents, so they are listed separately.

For almost thirty years the communities of Nillumbik have campaigned for an industry-standard arts venue at the Old Shire Offices site of 895 Main Road Eltham. This arts venue would be a permanent home to exhibit and store the Nillumbik Shire Council art collection, as well as providing much-needed exhibition and studio space for artists from across Nillumbik, and hosting significant touring exhibitions sourced from other galleries around Australia.

The current proposal for a Nillumbik Art Museum — proposed by the NAM Committee — is built on three decades of community endeavour by individuals, community groups, arts organisations and several iterations of local Council.

The site offers high accessibility via train and multiple bus routes, and is the right size for industry-standard exhibition spaces, storage for Nillumbik's art collection, professional exhibition space for local artists, and touring exhibitions from other institutions — all supported by an arts education program aligned to the Art and History curricula of local primary and high schools.

The Nillumbik art collection

Nillumbik Council's art collection consists of over 500 works by artists of national and international standing. These works are rarely displayed and are stored off-site in commercial storage outside of Nillumbik, costing thousands of dollars a year — and $60 for a person just to view a single artwork. The Nillumbik Art Museum will give the collection a permanent home, so the community can finally access their collection.
